Strategic Supply Chain Management Leadership Program

Supply Chain Management

Introduction

Supply chain management (SCM) is the process of strategically managing flows of goods, services, finance and knowledge, along with relationships within and among organizations, to achieve or support enterprise objectives. The goal of this module is to have participants appreciate the big picture and recognize the critical, strategic and dynamic nature of SCM. This module develops the functional and institutional aspects of SCM, and lays the foundation for the remaining modules and workshops.

About this Module

The focus of this module is on matters of strategic significance, from defining supply chain management for an organization, to assessing supply chain risk and conducting a supply chain social responsibility audit. Furthermore, there must be a fit between organizational goals and supply chain design. In line with our strategic approach is the notion of no "one best way" to manage supply chains. Different operating environments and organizational missions imply different "best" practices for supply chain management. Like the integrative nature of the pieces of the SCM puzzle, the sessions in this module are inter-related. For instance, supply chain mapping (Session 2) supports strategic decisions in cycle time reduction (Session 3) and risk assessment and mitigation (Session 10). The cases discussed in this module also contain a variety of overlapping and integrative issues in SCM.
