Knowledge Management
Introduction
Knowledge management is the effective management of an organization’s knowledge processes – active gathering, active dissemination and active application of knowledge – to achieve the organization’s goals. An organization can achieve competitive advantage through developing and implementing creative and timely business solutions that reuse applicable knowledge, and that use newly created knowledge (i.e. innovation). The goal of this module is for participants to understand what knowledge management is, where and how it should be applied, and the challenges that go along with implementing effective knowledge management systems.
About this Module
This module examines the technical and behavioural aspects of knowledge management, and prepares participants for assessing knowledge management systems, and equips participants with the tools and techniques to make recommendations for improvements in knowledge management systems. There are several interactive activities and cases that encourage participants to assess knowledge management systems in a variety of organizations and contexts.
Knowledge management is the process of capturing and making use of collective expertise anywhere in the organization. It involves knowledge creation, storage, dissemination, upgrade and application. Knowledge management includes three overlapping factors (people, technology and processes), with people as the most important component. Therefore, managing enterprise-wide knowledge is a strategic function. In this module, we examine the strategic aspects of knowledge management: knowledge management drivers and approaches (session 1), the knowledge management process (session 2), information technology and security (sessions 3 and 4), information quality (session 5) and knowledge transfer (session 6). The final case study requires candidates to create a proposal for an integrated knowledge management system.
